Seeing my substack a stream of ‘here is how to make money writing’ and ‘do these three things in your writing to make money’ is odd at best and fucking irritating me. But for every 250 people writing about writing to make money writing. There are some gems. With poetry so delicious, I think about it for hours. With shorts so punchy, I question if I have even been able to write at all.
Alright, so let's cut the shit - yeah, we all want to make some cash from writing; let us not be coy. What a luxury it is to see the dollars, pence, pounds, and euros stack up from published works. Delightful.
But I can’t help but feel I am watching the new crypto-bro movement in action.
Or, those who sell courses to people about how to make money online, and therefore making money online by selling courses. And then the next person, who just got the course, writes their own course to sell a course, so the pyramid is built…
Whatever, yeah, it is slightly different - but maybe not by all that much? Writers who are writing about making money writing, often do give tips, but maybe the point is that it is that very post about making money writing that is making them money, and perhaps not the delectable poem seven pages back in their substack.
I get it. I do.
Because this is my ‘complaining about writers writing about making money writing,’ and I’m just joining the churn from it. But, y’know, I bet I am not alone in the feeling. And, tbh, I guess if you’re writing that type of content and it is bringing in stacks of cash, I fucking love that for you, I hope you stack it thick and fast, and I hope it is funding whatever it is you really love to write. I just don’t want to read it, and I hope that those who do read it don’t feel disheartened or that the only way to make money writing is to write about writing (obviously, it isn’t, but it might be one of the fastest).
Unless it is actually your niche, and you are knowledged up and dropping fucking gems about publications, awards, prizes, grants, etc. Then I eat my dick, and please continue to help the writers of the world flourish. Good job, and I hope you make a lot of money.
But not Brenda or Bradley, who wrote a good title and got lots of people buying their AI written course for $5; telling writers consistency is critical and to write what you know 7 different ways.
Anyway, whatever, my substack, my thoughts, and this is one of them.
I actually wanted to write about some fungus and small stuff I saw the other day, but I just saw three ‘do this to make money on substack’ posts.
